Description

From his earliest disasters to his scientific triumphs to the tragedy of the fractured man he would become, this is the story you know, and the one that you don't. Brubaker pretty much hits the nail on the head with this book and it’s a real treat for a fan of Doom to sit and have this comprehensive origin story. He travels to America where he meets Reed Richards and has his unfortunate lab accident, providing him with physical scars to match the emotional ones. Eventually we get to how he takes Latveria and becomes ruler, and there's a twist at the end, as the narration has all been to a reporter who wants to profile him, but the revelation leaves us to wonder. This is forgivable as the dark glare is present from his early days, and Raimondo goes with a swarthy, slavic mien rather than the lantern-jawed teutonic of earlier incarnations, while still having that look of iron determinancy.

That's fine and good, but considering what Brubaker was doing on Captain America while this mini-series was being released, the end result is a little disappointing. Featuring the Latverian ruler's first battle with the accursed Reed Richards and his Fantastic Four - and their most epic clashes since! When the Doombot revealed his visage to the reporter, I briefly thought Brubaker and the artist Pablo Raimondo were trying to convey that Doom had become a cyborg and was purging himself of his human side, literally, by replacing the flesh with machinery. The art is decent, and definitely focuses on Victor and his transformation to Doctor (funny enough, he never actually earned that degree, because he was booted after the experiment which left his face (and psyche) scarred). Doom to me is one of the greatest villains of all time, even though I’ve admittedly never been a big fan of Fantastic Four until recently with Millar’s run and Hickman’s work.

The many people that Doom encountered in his life are perfectly-suited to give their brief but telling perspectives on the man behind that mask. One day, some of the Baron's soldiers came for Victor's father, asking him to use his knowledge of medicine to try and cure the Baron's dying wife. Fantastic Four: Books of Doom” is the best kind of reboot – one that clarifies the past (in some cases, revising the past BUT with explanation as to why previously “known” history was wrong), one that fleshes out events only hinted at in earlier tales.

Ed Brubaker schaffte es der altbekannten Entstehunggeschichte neue Aspekte abzugewinnen und neue Details hinzuzufügen. The story takes in the magical dealings of his mother, his family's problems with the Baron, the scholarship to America, meeting Reed Richards, the accident and its aftermath, the time in tibet and the revolution against the Baron, and nothing collides into anything else, we move fluidly along the timeline as the story slowly builds. You might consider Mephisto a cameo too, but he actually figures in the plot, so while he doesn’t appear that much, he really is more of an antagonist.

It is beautifully formatted so you lose nothing in the translation of a print book versus the digital version.I feel like a story that would flesh out Doom in six issues should have done a better job than it did.
